Minutes of Last Meeting

Great meeting last night. Our Chairwoman Rowena Rose gave a financial report to the members then she gave a report of the NJTO (New Jersey Tenants Organization) Meeting that she attended on Tuesday night. I appears that some city Council members are working behind the scenes to roll back some of the new changes to the new rent control ordinances. For those renewing leases in the month of April the C.P.I index increase is 0%. We have been informed that management is holding off renewing leases pending the outcome of the case that is currently being litigated in the Essex County Superior Court. We will be posting all info regarding this issue within the next few days.A report was given about our very successful membership drive. Our Sergeant at Arms, Armando Aviles supplied our 2 guest speakers. First was Newark School Advisory Board Vice Charwoman Ariagna Perello who spoke to the members about her duties and responsibilities as a Board Member and about the importance of voting in the upcoming Board of Education Election. Next was Jacqueline Quiles, Newark's new Deputy Mayor for Community Engagement who came by to introduce herself and offer her support to the organization. She also stated that her office at city hall will have an "OPEN DOOR POLICY" , she is willing to meet with anyone at anytime, no appointment needed. Our chair advised that we will be setting up a meeting with management to deal with some concerns that were expressed by our members. Prior to the meeting closing we had an open question and answer period to allow everyone to voice their concerns.
